What age does it take for a native speaker to read a novel?

Take an example, 'Atonement' by Ian McEwan.

I am a 22 years old university graduate from Asia but I cannot read it?

It is too hard for me!

Am I a loser?

You are definitely not a loser! Clearly, from your writing above you have a good command of English. However, understanding a language well enough to write clearly about factual things or everyday life, and to speak understandably about those things, is very different than understanding the nuances of a language well enough to read and understand quality literary works in that language.

  • You are definitely not a loser!

  • The fact that you have mastered English as well as you have, while not being a native speaker, is very commendable.
  • Believe it or not, many native English speakers would not understand Atonement in its full meaning, although they might understand the literal meaning of most of the words.
