To whom it may concern,

I am a physics professor at Nankai University. It is my great pleasure to write this letter to support Ma Cheng in his application for your excellent graduate program.

I got to know Cheng when he attended one of my lectures Fundamental of software science and computational physics. During the first a few classes, I did not take any special notice of him. But one course project on chaos really made him stand out. Using both simulated and analytical tools, Cheng gave a thorough and accurate analysis of chaos in logistic mapping and a simple pendulum system. In particular, his exploration on bifurcation left me a deep impression. With the appropriate and skillful employment of Poincare map and phase portrait analysis, Cheng successfully presented the bifurcation feature under different conditions. From his project and later discussions with Cheng, I found his great interest in complex systems.

And for homework, I recommended all the students use Matlab to complete assignments and also encouraged them to try other programming languages. Cheng is of very few students to do extra exercise. He not only did a very good job in Matlab but also practiced these numerical methods in Python. Moreover, he was not satisfied with using these methods, Cheng also pursued a further understanding of the behind principles and often discussed with me. I believe this is a testament to Cheng’s passion for physics and new knowledge. With his great enthusiasm and efforts, he achieved a top grade in this course.

Recently, Cheng told me that he would apply to your program to deepen his understanding of complex systems and further academic research. As his teacher, I feel very proud of him. I strongly support his decision and hope that my recommendation will receive favorable consideration.
