what about that comma...!

As i read in a book about air around us i noticed a thing .could any one help me in ?
" As you walk home from school ,the air is warm and still. The sky is full of thick , dark clouds.in distance "
Why! That comma is between ( thick and dark)
That is my question and thanks for your jobs guys.
