What a pronoun indicates.

Paleontologists have studied T. rex skulls and determined that the creature had a huge olfactory lobe, the part of the brain used for smell. Although it couldn't see well, it could pick up a scent?such as that coming from a dead animal?at long distances. As a matter of fact, T. rex's olfactory lobe is very similar to that of the greatest scavenger of them all?the vulture, which can smell decaying flesh twenty-five miles away.

I think "the greatest scavenger" indicates "the vulture," and that "them all" indicates all present scavengers.
And I'd like to know if my assumption is right.
