What a pirate was like

Hello everyone,

Could you simplify the phrase "what a pirate was like" because I don't know "who does this phrase belong to" in the following sentence?

- I had seen the captain"Black Dog", the blind man "Pew", and I thought I knew what a pirate was like - very different from this clean and pleasant inn-keeper.

Regards

JA
