Thank you ever so much for taking the time to read my questions! I read all these words and expressions from an airplane pilot from Boston. It was an interview about his career.
As far as I know the word "People" is plural. e.g.
People are, People have to, People run in the rain, People are running in the streets...etc.
But I read yesterday something like this: People
has nothing to do, It should be:
People have nothing to do. shouldn't it be?. Can someone explain, please.
another doubts:
-How ofeten is used the verb
gall. e.g. "
That point of view particularly galls me". is it a posh word?
-The word
blue-collar as its similar
white-collar are somewhat pejorative?, or are they perfectly normal to use them in formal writings. Are they related to redneck?
-I don't understand the word
segue: (I have looked it up in a dictionary but is doesnot make sense to me)
for example: "
....that's pretty obvious segue into the security situation that exists in 2006." -what about:
"aquates to it being" umm certanly a difficult expression. it seems to me a very polite, high society expression. what do you think?
-the words
Ludicrous and
Ridiculous are more or less synonymous? (explanation requested)
-What about the word
piddle e.g. "piddling issues". A posh word?
-What about
"acquiesce" (accept unwillingly)
really formal word? can you give me an example. (gosh! it is hard to pronounce)
-quote-unquote: "..." it is an expression used before a word or another expressions said by someone else and we don't agree with? (example requested)
thank you ever so much.
