Wh relative clauses are not introduced by conjunctions.

wh relative clauses are not introduced by conjunctions.

AG wrote this in another forum. I hope he comes along to look at this, but comments from others are welcome.

I may have misunderstood the words, because AG and I sometimes use different terminology. We'll see.

It seems to me that sentences such as the ones below are wh relative clauses 'introduced' by conjunctions:

John, who taught me French, and who shared my dislike of sport, has died recently.
John, who taught me French and who(m) I liked very much, has died recently.
Prague, which is now my home and where I have most of my friends, is a beautiful city.

Aspara Gus wh relative clauses are not introduced by conjunctions. This was in reply to Ivanhr’s statement “It [the relative clause] is introduced by the conjunction when ”. By ‘conjunction’ I’m sure he meant ‘subordinating conjunction’, and so did I.

  • I normally don’t even use the term ‘conjunction’ and instead use ‘subordinator’ for words like that and whether and ‘coordinator’ for words like and since they behave so differently.

Thanks. That's cleared that up.

I, too, prefer 'subordinator' and 'coordinator'
