We've only got

I was listening a podcast and one part is about a girl in a shoe shop and she asks to the shop assistant about a shoe size and the assistant answers:

"We've only got the sizes on the shelf."

Is it possible to say: "We only have the sizes on the shelf."?

Top answer

Yes, that's possible. However, I prefer to place the 'only' differently: We have only the sizes on the shelf.

I think you are as neurotic about the placement of 'only' as I am about split infinitives!

I gave up on split infinitives a long time ago. However, I think that "only" will go with me to my grave. Neurosis? Perhaps.
