We've heard tell about the man they call Star-Lord [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2)

The video starts with this conversation:

Gamora: How'd you locate us now?

Ego: Well, even where I reside, out past the edge of what's known, we've heard tell about the man they call Star-Lord.

Here, I don't quite understand what Ego says, specifically the last part.

What is "tell" in there?

'Cause I can only guess that he means something like "we've heard about the man they call Star-Lord".

Or my transcription is wrong?
