Western civilization

President Bush sought to reassure Americans that the war would be fought largely outside the US and would not involve any tax increases. It was by no means clear, however, whether terrorism would become a lasting or ephemeral preoccupation for the US. Contrary to the fighting words of the President, this was not a war for existence or for the survival of the western civilization.

In this text, does the western civilization mean the US? And the last part can be like:

this was not a war for existence of the western civilization or for the survival of the western civilization?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Clive! Thanks a lot!!!

By the way, shouldn't the be added before existence like:

this was not a war for the existence of the western civilization or for the survival of the western civilization. The original text doesn't have it though?

"the western civilization" is wrong in this context. It should be "Western Civilization."

"Western Civilization" means all cultures and civilizations that trace their origins to ancient Greece. Just for the sake of clarity this means all of Europe (eastern and western), Canada, the U.S., Mexico, all of Central and South America, and possibly a few others.
