Western an Eastern

Hi,
I always heard people say," Some place has western influence on some place." Or some news articles will have," Eastern has waken up." I always wonder what they mean. Does western (have to be capitalized?) mean USA or Europe or Britain and eastern mean China specifically or Asia region countries? Since the earth is round, I am not sure where the line people measure from. Also, in USA, people also talk about wild west and east. Does wild West mean Pacific region states or it includes Nevada, Texas, and other middle regions states?

Thanks,

Ryan

Generally speaking, Western (yes, it should be capitalized) means Europe and the Americas, while Eastern would mean Asia. I honestly don't know how Africa would fit into that. The old terms occidental and oriental correspond to east and west, although you rarely see those words used any longer.

  • The "Wild West" was when the US was first being settled (with European settlers -- it's still a blot on the nation's reputation that they didn't give standing to the people who had already settled there thousands of years ago, but I digress), so it would refer to anything west of the Mississippi River.
  • It refers to the time more than the location, when ranchers were just getting started, there were cowboys, and bandits, and not a lot of law enforcement, but people did take care of each other.
