Jamie has made Kat a volcano model for her project and says:
Meet mount Kat, part deux. Lava spewing, noxious gass spewing,
filliger (not sure if I heard this one right) killing mountain of doom.
We're talking a solid C plus plus. He opens up the model and shows her what's inside.
Is he saying it's unbreakable or what?
Now, can we refocus on Jude?
Kat: Jamie, you don't have a hope. The same as don't have a chance?

"C++" is a mark awarded for exams, school projects, etc. "C" is average/mediocre, "C+" is a little higher, and "C++" a little higher still (but still not great). "solid" means that C++ is a safe or secure prediction (possibly with a hint of irony since "solid" in this sense is usually used for good and desirable things, whereas C++ is not that great a mark).

Can you tell me what's the reference with the pluses and minuses?
I mean when I hear C+ I get the impression this plus points to the next letter (D)
which is a lower mark. And C- sends you back to B, which is the higher mark.
Is that the scheme or is it the other way around?

A+ = excellent, top notch

A = very, very good

A- = not quite in the excellent range

B+ [etc.]

The system in the US has traditionally been A,B,C,D,F - but since 'Failure' has such a negative connotation, many schools now use E in its place. As a teacher, I have always felt that the + is used to encourage the student to do just a little bit better, while the - is somewhat of a warning that the work isn't what it could be.

I think that we often have a mental picture (correct or not) of a village at the base of the volcano. Could this be "villager-killing"?
