were or where?

Park rangers at Bernardo O'Higgins National Park said they found a 100-feet-deep crater in late May were the lake had been in March.

Above sentence was taken from Yahoo.

What 'were' is doing here? should it be where, if not then what grammatical structure is it?

Dear Noori-

You are absolutely right! It should be "where". There is another mistake in this sentence. It should be a "100-foot-deep crater". And, in your sentence, you should have asked, "What is 'were' doing here?" The lesson is: don't believe that everything you read on the internet is correct. David (ESL teacher in New York City)
