which of the 2 following sentences is the correct one and why?

- Your Excellency were mentioned...

OR

- Your Excellency was mentioned...

Anonymous - Your Excellency were mentioned... If these are supposed to be sentences, only the second one is correct. It's true that "You were mentioned" is correct, but "Your Excellency" is considered to be third person singular in form, instead of second person singular - I'm quite sure.
