Were or are

I didn't know u were in London is this correct or
I didn't u are in London (he is still in London when i sent him an email)

but it's a fast and easy way to use u instead of you...so we can type faster and faster..

Learning proper English is neither fast nor easy. If it is a race, the winner is the one who looks best at the end of it, and using 'u' for 'you' makes you look illiterate.
