Were not to be?

Hi! everyone.Could you tell me,if this sentence is right?
"They fought Doughtily but there was to no chance to be there for them" (Is it grammatically correct?)
Or I should right the coloured part as "chance was not to be there for them"
Actually I want to use "was to" in the second part of the sentence, so please help me fix it in it.
Thanks!
