This is a part of a conversation between a native speaker and a non-native speaker. It is given below.
Non native speaker : In South Asia we only learn English to get a lucrative job. That is why we have to know many unnecessary English words.
Native speaker : Knowing English as a native language in the United States I think makes us Americans lazy with our education and not many Americans learn a second language to fluency. We’re not motivated in the way we would be if it meant getting a lucrative job.
Could you please explain what that native speaker meant by this sentence “We’re not motivated in the way we would be if it meant getting a lucrative job”.
Hasibrahman We’re not motivated in the way we would be if it meant getting a lucrative job. If it (learning a second language) meant that we could get a lucrative job, then we would be motivated (to learn a second language). But because it does not mean this, we are not motivated in the same way / to the same extent.
