Were locked/caught/trapped in a battle

The two boys were locked in a battle for first prize.

Hi,
Is "locked" in the above interchangeable with "caught" and "trapped?" Thanks.

'Caught' and 'trapped' suggest more to me that they did not want to be in this battle.
