Were joined them

I would like to say that guards to a group of prisoners (X) attached another group of other prisoners (Y). How to say this in English?

I can only say that " Y joined X" but I would like to emphasize that the joining was made by guards.

They were attached/joined by Y ????

The guards brought in another group of prisoners to join the others. The guards brought in another group of prisoners to join those that they were already guarding. The guards brought in another group of prisoners to join the group that they were already guarding.
