Readng the sentence above, I don't understand 'were it not~' clearly. Is it that 'were it not~' can be paraphrased into 'if it were not (that) so much shame has to be overcome on the way to it?' In fact, I've heard of it (Were it not for / If it were not for), but never heard of it (Were it not that / If it were not that).
