Were it not for

Some people say "Were it not for" is wrongly used; it must be replaced by "Had it not been for". Do you think so?

Were it not for the free tickets, I would'n have gone to the films so often.

"Were it not for" ... "Had it not been for"

Neither one bothers me. I suppose you could argue that "Had ..." is more correct technically, because of the 'wouldn't have'.

"Were it ..." usually goes with "would" or "wouldn't". "Had it ..." usually goes with "would have" or "wouldn't have".
