Hi
Please tell me which is more suitable here.

Formed in 1959, the Beatles were a British rock music group. From 1964 through 1969 they were gaining/gained unprecedented popularity.

Gained would usually be the appropriate choice.

'were gaining' implies they were on the way to becoming popular but were not as popular yet as they would be later.
'gained' implies they had already achieved popularity, which is more like the truth (in my opinion, anyway).
