Vocabulary

we're assessing the bag situation

Dear all,

I have difficulty with understanding the meaning of "asssess."
TV show (how I met your mother)
Ted and Barney go to an airport with fake luggage to pick up girls but they looked sketchy and the airport security busted them and the airport security were concerned that maybe they carried bombs in their bags.

Police officer: we're "assessing" the bag situation.

I checked the dictionary but to no avail. Oxford Dic:

(evaluate or estimate the nature, ability, or quality of.)

But this definition won't fit here.

Any help will be appreciated:)

Thank you.

In other words, can we say " assess" means:
To check a place or situation in order to make sure that there is no danger or problem?

Yes, in the right context; I do not vouch for all situations:

to carefully consider a situation, person, or problem in order to make a judgment (Macmillan)
