'Were' and 'was'

What is the difference between 'were' and 'was' and can the be used synonymously?

Top answer

I was he was she was it was you were we were they were (Edited) ... but also there is the special case "if I/he/she/it were". Not sure if you may be thinking about that?

  • In those cases "were" is more formal, but you will often hear "was" too.
