Were

Hello everyone,

Is it OK to use "were" in the following sentence?

- I were on Flint's ship when he went to bury the treasure.

Source/treasure Island, chapter "the man of the island"

Note/ At the back of the book, it has been written "ungrammatical, uneducated form used instead of was. Is it used in any way in English by native speakers in this form of sentence?

Regards,

JA

- I were on Flint's ship when he went to bury the treasure. If you're a character in Treasure Island , it's fine. It gives the reader an idea of the type of person he's dealing with.

  • Practice talking like that if you want to be a pirate some day.
  • It's completely wrong in modern standard English, as you already know from the note in your book.
