Went/had gone

I didn't see where he went.

Is it possible to use this instead of "had gone"? Are they both equally correct? When do I use which one?

"Went" and "didn`t" are both past simple . "Had gone" is past perfect, so you have to put the first part of the sentence in the past perfect too. I hadn`t seen where he had gone.

This is fine just as you have written it.

I would not write "had gone" instead of "went" (though it's not wrong).
