Went wrong/would go wrong

would you please help me what is the difference between these 2 sentences in grammatical structure(if clause).Is there any difference in meaning or what!?Thanks a million for your help

1.Previously, self-driving vehicle testing was only allowed with a driver to take over the car if something went wrong.

2.Previously, self-driving vehicle testing was only allowed with a driver to take over the car if something would go wrong.

"if" and "would" do not usually occur together in the same clause.

You might have "if something were to go wrong" here (but it seems overly formal) if you want, but your first sentence has the better choice ("went wrong").
