What's the meaning of the following sentence?

I went out with a friend yesterday

1) I went shopping/to the movies with a person that is only my friend (not romantically involved).

2) I went on a date with my friend.

Now I'm confused because according to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/go+out

go out - date regularly; have a steady relationship with;

Go + out usually (as here) simply means go into a public area from one's home. If you would think about it, going out with a friend yesterday could not constitute a steady relationship! In order to mean that, it needs to be in a sentence like this: I went out with Jane for a year before we broke up.
