WENT or WAS

More than five thousand years ago, Chinese scholars accurately described the flow of blood as a continuous circle controlled by the hear t, although the discovery WENT/WAS unnoticed in the West.

Guys,

Which one is correct WENT or WAS-any difference? If I replace although by but will it put the equal emphasis on both the clause?

Thank you
