I went to the store. (simple past tense)
I have gone to the store. (present perfect tense)

* Simple past tense
It is used to talk about states or events that took place at a specified time in the past and are not happening any longer. Ex.:
. I went to the store [this morning].
. I called you yesterday.

When past tense is used, a specific time should be mentioned but not compulsory I think.Emotion: smile

I dont think there is an issue with correct or incorrect. However, context... as a teacher I tend to get my students to focus on 'Use'.

So, for example: Your room mate asks," Where have you been? Where did you go? I have been waiting for you for over an hour!"

Your response," Oh sorry, I went to the store."

Hi,

Here's a realistic and common kind of scenario for the Present Perfect sentence.

A man comes home and finds that his wife is not in the house. He thinks 'Hmmm, where is she? She is normally here'. Then he finds a note that says 'Hi dear, I have gone ( I've gone) to the store'.

Best wishes,

In addition, the previous poster seemed perhaps to be thinking (Ugh! This is not an expression I hear very often) tha

Oh, yeah, you were explaining the present perfect. I just wondered about the past simple. I thought it was ok too, but I just asked to be sure... I see, anyway, thanks

No. You wouldn't write about something in the past tense that you haven't yet done.

Hi Bokeh

According to your post, the present perfect would be equally wrong, wouldn't it?

A quick and admittedly unscientific survey of my household had unanimous results: Everyone said they would write "I went to the store" in a note (for the sort of situation Clive described).
