"Went" or "had gone"

"If a man comes home and finds that his wife is not in the house." Assume that he asked to his mother
, where is she?
What would be the answer? Is it,she had gone to the store or she went to the store.

if you're reporting the information you'll need to get in mind the rules of reported speech, "simpple past" turns into "past perfect" that'll be "she had gone to the store" in the other hand if you're answering a direct question just say "She went to the store".

You also don't need to "Ask to" someone. Asks is directional already.

"Had gone" is passive, the more correct form is 'she went to the store' however depending on context, if she left a long time ago it should probably read "She is AT the store"
