Went or Gone?

Hi,

Alan was looking for Amy and asked one of her friends who was seen to be with her earlier.

Which of these questions should Alan have used?

1) Do you know where Amy went?
2) Do you know where Amy has gone?

I have a feeling the (2) is the correct one.

What is the difference between the two in that context?

I feel small differences like this do not annoy native speakers much. As far as I know, they are very context-dependent and subjective occasionally. I wish I could master them but as for now, I think I have bigger problems to worry about. Of course, if the native speakers could give an easy-to-understand explanation, I'm curious to know too.
