Went off

Son : Dear Mom, Why did you left your husband i.e. my father?

Mother : No dear, I didn't left him, but he went off with his new girl friend.

Are these expressions correct?

Yet I think it would sound more natural to refer to the man only as "my father", and to drop the "but"
I didn't quite get what you mean by this.
