Well versed in

Hi,

Is ‘well versed in’ formal or can it be used in an everyday conversation as well?

Fi.:”I’m not well versed in cars so I’m not sure how to fix the gearbox.”

Thank you.

I wouldn't say 'well versed' was only used in formal writing, but it isn't used that often in casual conversation. It's not a strange thing to use in daily conversation, especially among literate people, but it's not used in day-to-day speech by young people or those who haven't got a great vocabulary.
