Speech & Pronunciation

well

Hi,
none of the dictionaries I checked say that "well" have an alternative pronunciation. But I keep hearing "well" pronounced with a schwa, wuh-ll, not with the "e" as in "bed".

Any comments? Thanks Emotion: smile

Are you sure you didn't mean we'll? That's more likely to occur in unstressed position than well.

I hear (and say ^^; ) "wull" a lot when people are trying to pronounce the word "well." It's just laziness combined with regional trends in vowel shifts.

I think the word ‘well’ /wel/ may be pronounced with a schwa /wcl/ in its weak (unaccented) form especially when used as an interjection.

Yes, that's what I sometimes notice. It happens at the beginning of a statement, and "well" is pronounced very fast...

Weeeell... I think that...
Wuh-l I think that... <--- fast, even
