welcome speech for my school's founder's day celebrations

i ve been assigned the job of compering my school's 53 rd annual day or the founder's day funtion. I want to know about how can i begin the entire function [what should i say?]
These celebrations will take place in an evening in my school's premises and the audience will mostly comprise of parents and siblings of my school's students.
Its a very formal occasion and around 1000 - 1500 people are expected to turn up!
please suggest me somthing as soon as possible.
