Weighing or weighting -- synonym?

Hello,
is there a difference in meaning when using the word weighing or weighting? I am using it in the context of a mathematical function. For example, I would use it in a sentence like the following.
"It is worthwhile noting that for this type of weighing function, an efficient process can be used..."
I appreciate responses, but prefer those that have some solid references to it (eventually I have to defend that use also Emotion: smile).
Regards, Chris
