Wear out

Please help me distinguish passive or active structure in some sentences:

eg: i have worn out my shoes

my shoes are worn out <<<<how can shoes wear out by themselves?

i was grieved by the bad news /i grieved to hear it <<<i'm confused why both sentences are ok?

can i use both passive and active structure in both example? thank you so much.
