wear or use?

Hi everyone!
Somebody told me that when it's raining, English speakers say "I wear an umbrella" but it sounds odd to me...
I've looked up my dictionary to find the definition of the word "wear" and it says "to have clothes, shoes, glasses, jewelry etcON your body.
This really puzzles me...
I'd rather say "I use an umbrella" or "I carry an umbrella"
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance.
