Wear away or wear out

Her carpet wore (away/ out/ down)

I go for "wore out". I would be grateful if you told me the difference between wear away, wear out, wear down.

Hi I'd say that 'wear away' is a gradual process; 'wear out' is the end of that process. 'Wear down' is often used for people rather than things: - Our carpet is wearing away, we should think about buying a new one in the next few months. - Our carpet is worn out: we should buy a new one tomorrow.
