Wean off

"People are slowly weaning themselves off (eating) fast food." Does the use of 'wean off' here sound natural?

I was told that 'wean off' is too serious to be used in this case, but then I came across an example sentence in macmillan dictionary --> "We’re https://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/trying to https://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/wean ourselves off https://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/watch_1 too much https://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/television ."

Could you tell me if it's appropriate and if not, would you be able to offer me some alternatives?

Thank you.
