Why can't I use hopefully in this case?

Hi,

'Hopefully' has come to be used in the sense of 'the writer hopes . . . , but purists still feel it is substandard.

eg Hopefully Mary will cook dinner. This is commonly intended to mean that the writer hopes Mary will cook dinner.
