We WERE WONDERING if next weekend would be...

In the following sentence:

> We WERE WONDERING if next weekend would be convenient for you.

is WONDERED possible as well? (The sentence comes from a letter to a friend and it's an invitation.)

Best regards,
and Merry Christmas (in Poland, there are already some billboard advertisements featuring Santa Claus! and Christmas trees and decorations for sale in hypermarkets! are we just such a strange country or does that happen where you live, too?)
D.

Hi, Invitations vary in 'strength' and politeness levels. The use of 'wonder' makes the invitation 'weaker', and perhaps more polite in that it suggests a little that 'we wouldn't really be surprised if our invitation is not worthy of you'. The tense used also influences the strength and politeness.
