we were totally overwhelmed by the fantastic scenery

Lat smmer, my family went to Rome. Before we went there, people had warned us of pickpockets. However, we didn't take this to heart because we were totally overwhelmed by the fantastic scenery.

Is it apropriate for me to reword the part in bold as the following? If not, feel feel to correct me. Thanks.

We were totally charmed/fascinated by the excellent scenery.

To me, this sentence sounds better.

We were totally charmed and fascinated by the magnificent scenery.

Scenery can be fantastic or magnificent, but it's a little odd to call it excellent, as if it had been striving mightily to be the best it could be and succeeded in excelling at it!
