we were on our way

Despite the fact that it was ages ago, I can clearly remember an unusually cold and snowy day of winter 2000 when my family and I got back from day trip to Italy.
While we were on our way home, a terrible piece of news about a serious road accident involving two vehicles and one minibus was broadcast from radio.
I want to say that 'when we were on our way home while we were driving'
How I can say that in English?!
I mean I want the listener to know we were on our way in our cars not taking a walk.

Thanks dear techer. That was great help.
when we generally say : "we were on our way home" it means that we take a walk, otherwise we specifically emphasise we are driving or walking or taking taxi.
Am I right?!

Correct.
"We were on our way home" does not indicate the mode of transportation. It just means we were returning home. Emotion: wink
