We were just saying, this whole thing is so stupid.

The title came from a conversation. But I would like to replace "is" with "was." Any comments about this? Thanks.

I think you sure could, if there is a good reason to do so. Changing it to "was" you would shift some facts into the past, and whether that's ok or not depends of the context.
