WE WENT RIGHT PAST A LOT OF that audience

Hello,
I would like to know the exact meaning of this sentence from Miles Davis's Autobiography:

'We played the Hollywood Bowl with The Band, who were real hot around this time. At this concert our band was getting more and more into a lot of free-form things, SO I THINK WE WENT RIGHT PAST A LOT of that audience.'

Thanks, jo.

You can say He didn't understand it in various ways.

It went right past him.
It was beyond him.
It went over his head.
It went way over his head.

I've even heard this:

It didn't even touch a hair.
