We take/ sit for an exam

I didn't learn 'do an exam' at school! I learnt 'take an exam' and 'sit for the exam'. When I later heard 'do an exam' for the first time, honestly I felt this might have been another americanisation - modern usage or whatever. In that way I am surprised it's a British usage and not AlpheccaStars's!
