We spoke and they understood us

I'd like to know which of the following sentences can be considered acceptable (both grammatically correct and meaningful).

The idea behind all them should be the same: we went to a foreign country, we spoke a foreign language and they understood us.

1) We made ourselves understood.

2) We managed to speak.

3) We let them understand us.

4) We were able to express ourselves.

Alternatives are welcomed, too.

Thank you.
