I guess you'd say because it's an uncountable. "Mankind" is like "humanity." We save these children for the sake of humanity. (not "the humanity") Which is not to say you could never say "the humanity." I'm thinking of the famous radio broadcast of the burning of the Hindenburg. The speaker was nearly in tears, "Oh, the humanity!"
